How the Car Horn Works
When the horn button on the steering wheel or other location is pressed, current from the battery flows through the circuit to the horn relay’s electromagnetic coil. The coil activates the relay’s moving contacts, closing the circuit and allowing current to flow to the horn. The electric current energizes the electromagnet inside the horn, causing the diaphragm to vibrate and produce sound.
Common Causes of Horn Malfunctions
- Horn Positioning Issues:
Many horn malfunctions are caused by water damage, especially if the horn is installed in a position where it can easily get wet during rain. This can lead to horn damage. - Intermittent Functioning:
